The UBF filter combines biological filtration and UV sterilisation in one unit and is ideal for fish ponds. It separates, removes and digests organic matter and algae, sterilises the water and removes pathogens and bacteria. As water enters the first stage, UV lamps generate ultraviolet light and irradiate the water to disinfect it. In the next stage, foam layers prevent larger particles from passing through the filters, causing organic matter and algae to settle in the filter box. Aerating the retained material activates aerobic bacteria, which digest the organic matter over time. Small particles carrying aerobic bacteria pass through the filters and return to the pond, where the bacteria help digest other material present.
UV or ultraviolet light: sunlight, the natural source of ultraviolet light, destroys bacteria and algae in water. Various industries also use UV-emitting lamps or O3 gas to disinfect and sterilise air, water and utensils; these are key elements in treatment and sterilisation. Plenty of sunlight containing UV radiation is recommended for fish-farming ponds.
Organic matter can decompose in two ways. 1- Naturally: anaerobic bacteria reproduce without oxygen and digest organic matter, producing strong odours. This is common in nature. 2- Industrially: more suitable for urban environments, air is injected into organic matter so that aerobic bacteria multiply, with no odour or very little odour.
